Purpose of the Graduate Assistantship Program

Graduate Assistantships support the University in its teaching, research, and service missions; help establish a graduate culture within academic units; and provide financial assistance and enhanced educational and developmental opportunities for graduate students.

The assistantship program is designed to aid in the successful completion of the degree pursued and to enhance career opportunities through applied professional experiences. Analogous to undergraduate student scholarships, the graduate assistantship program aims to recognize and reward the University’s very best graduate students.

The Office of Graduate Studies provides administrative oversight to ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures and parity among all academic graduate assistants. (Office of Housing Operations and Residence Life and Athletic Department graduate assistantships are handled through those units, respectively.)

On this website, areas or departments of the university that hire graduate assistants will be referred to as “units,” and master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral students will be referred to collectively as “graduate students.”

Overview of the Graduate Assistantship Program

The Office of Graduate Studies awards approximately 80 graduate assistantships each fall and spring semester and approximately 25 graduate assistantships each summer, contingent upon funding.

In addition to a monthly, stipend, these assistantships carry a scholarship of 6-9 semester hours of graduate tuition and the general university fee.

Graduate assistants must report to the Human Resources Office in Angle Hall to produce evidence of identity and employment authorization within three business days of the date employment begins.

If you choose to apply for a graduate assistantship at JSU, your transcripts and letters of recommendation will be reviewed by personnel from the units who will supervise a graduate assistantship.

To apply, go to the JSU Online Employment System website. You will be able to scroll this page to view instructions on how to search and apply for vacancies for first-time users and returning users, search job openings, attach supporting documents as requested, check the status of jobs for which you have applied, add additional documents if you have not completed the application process, or withdraw your application if you have changed your mind.
